What is Machine Dance?
Traditionally, most modern gaming controllers are designed to be used with your thumbs only. This interaction has remained unchanged until recently. New developments in interactive controllers are beginning to emerge. Now gamers will no longer be limited to basic handheld controllers, intended for use while seated and controlled only by hand.
The original focus of Machine Dance was to change the way people play video games.
Machine Dance is built around the following idea:
- An interactive video game controller operated with your feet
- Music
- Rhythm
In the instance of Machine Dance, this new interactive controller takes the form of a dance platform. The platform has four arrow panels facing Up, Down, Left and Right. The video game software displays arrow charts on a monitor, comparable to sheet music for musical instruments. These arrow charts scroll over the screen from the bottom to the top. Once the arrows reach a marker at the top, the player steps on the matching arrow on the dance platform. The arrows follow the beat and rhythm of the music. As more complex arrow combinations appear the player must be able to twist and turn in order to hit all the arrows.
The requirement of skill, muscle endurance and stamina not only changes the way we play video games, but provides an active and healthy way to have fun.
